The cultural centre at “Teach an Phiarsaigh” in Rosmuc provides an introduction to the Irish language, Gaeltacht culture and environment, focusing on 1916 leader Patrick Pearse and his relationship with Co Galway. The building matches the original thatched cottage’s vernacular 43-degrees roof pitch and spans 10m deep along its 60m length.
The development of the new centre was undertaken by Údarás na Gaeltachta and Simon J Kelly Architects were commissioned for the design, a pinched open gable roof of fretted zinc to complement the burnt shades of Connemara’s bog landscape. Carey Building Contractors, Galway enlisted A&A Quinn Roofing Solutions Ltd. as specialist zinc craftsmen. The project was completed on time and within the budget of €2.2m.
